Our Man at the Stampede
Meet Telus chuckwagon driver, Mark Sutherland, our man at the Stampede. Get used to this face. You are going see a lot more of this man before the Stampede is over.
Mark Sutherland, a second-generation chuckwagon driver, was raised on the rodeo circuit.
Following in the footsteps of his famous father, reigning champion chuckwagon driver Kelly Sutherland, Mark has been on the circuit for the past 13 years. Father and son compete regularly and Mark is giving his elder cause for worry as he gives Kelly a run for his money. Mark has been driving since 1993 and was an outrider for six years prior to hitting the buckboard. This will be Mark's second time competing in the Calgary Stampede Rangeland Derby. In his first Stampede outing in 1996, Mark went the full 10 days penalty free and placed 14th and took the Orville Standfield Award for top rookie driver.
In 1999, Mark had four top five runs and in his best finish of the year, took fourth at the Ponoka Stampede.
Mark is a native of Grand Prairie, Alberta. A former schoolteacher, he currently works in the oil industry when not racing. His biggest fans are his wife Dina and children, Kiera and Dayton. In his spare time Mark trains horses, plays hockey and works on that next win.
Hey Mark, that's us making all the noise in the grandstand.
