Decidedly Jazz Danceworks has the blues down to its shoes. The Calgary company is exploring all the emotional shades of blues music in its latest production, Longings . . . for the invisible. While 12 dancers embody the look of the blues -- sensual, earthy, soulful -- guest singer Jackie Richardson provides the authentic, African-influenced vocals.

Keyboardist and percussionist Kristian Alexandrov was raised by a family of musicians in Bulgaria and exposed to a variety of musical styles: Bulgarian folk, classical, rock, contemporary jazz and Afro-Cuban. His debut CD, Funked-Up Jazz, shadow boxes with Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock and Prince, in a genre of groove-driven funk.

Buddy Guy, often called the "greatest living electric blues guitarist", is a contemporary of Muddy Waters, Otis Rush and Guitar Slim. Guy uses distorted riffs and sharp and staccato-laced leads. Guy is joined by singer, guitarist and cornetist Olu Dara, offering sounds of Mississippi blues, jazz, fund, and African style.

Valeri Dimchev Trio (Bulgaria)

Béela Fleck: banjo, the world's premiere banjo player from New York City, picked up the banjo at age 15, joining the progressive bluegrass band New Grass Revival after high school. He formed the Flecktones in 1989, which have produced 7 CDs, fusing jazz, bluegrass, funk and electronics. Members include: Béla Fleck - banjo, Victor Wooten - bass, Future Man - synthetic drumitar and Jeff Coffin - saxophone.
