Funnyfest - The Calgary Comedy Festival
June 7 - June 16, 2001
Performers:
Seán Cullen
One of the most original and unique comedic minds of our time. For more than a decade, this master of stream-of-consciousness improvisation, parody, absurdism
and extreme weirdism has performed all over the globe. His repertoire includes stand-up, song, characterizations and spot on impersonations. Seán hails from the dynamic, outlandish and brilliantly irreverent comedy trio Corky and The Juice Pigs who were recurring guests on FOX's MAD TV. Website: www.Seán Cullen.com.
Kerry Talmage
"Scrappy, mad-as-hell standup survivor Kerry Talmage has been close enough to the abyss to peer right over the edge. [He has] a hard existential edge with a wealth of strong comedy material. He's a classic case of someone who can find humor even in the gravest
of circumstances." - Daryl Jung, NOW Magazine. Website: KerryTalmage.com.
Flip Schultz
Flip is an accomplished stand up comic and actor. Known recently for winning the "Next Big Star Competition" with Ed McMahon and his "Speedo Guy" performance in the hit KELLOGGS SPECIAL K ad.
Mark Dorman
One of the most likeable comic's you'll ever meet today. He will remind you of every Oddball Friend you've ever Had or ever will want to have. His Madcap Mental Perspective Lunacy will touch you in places you never thought you had or will ever have and if not he's more than likely to touch himself.
Kurt Firla
Well, lets start at the beginning. I've been doing comedy ever since I can remember, which is... back when I was still a fetus. Back then there weren't many places to do stand-up, so I'd have to entertain my mom's spleen and left kidney. Boy, those were the days.
Dirty Laundry
A live improvised (no script) soap opera. Dirty Laundry will be spoofing FunnyFest. This is truly an unique comedy event as Dirty Laundry dares to mock, cajole and make funny stuff DAILY about the very Calgary comedy festival they are proud be to be part of.
HOT & SOFT
A One Woman Stage Show starring Muriel Miguel
In conjunction with Teatro Berdache, Calgary's gay and lesbian theatre company, FunnyFest presents Muriel Miguel's side-splitting comedy HOT 'N SOFT, an ode to Aboriginal lesbian lust.
Obscene But Not Heard
Obscene But Not Heard began in 1988 with the classroom antics of four Mount Royal College Theatre Arts students: Len Harvey, Peter Strand Rumpel, Tom Sarsons and Tony Binns. Four years later, while at the University of Victoria Theatre Department, Tom and Tony produced "Death and the Single Woman" comedy sketch shows in various nightclubs around Victoria.
Jimmy DellaValle
A personable guy, who's like a "breath of fresh air" this good looking young comedian has enough experience to quickly grab the attention of his audience and keep them on the edge of their seats while discussing what it was like to grow up in a dysfunctional{blue collar} family and his crazy life experiences.
Nelson Giles
"Nelson's participation was greatly appeciated and highly enjoyed by his audience. His Jack Nicholson impersonation was a show stopper. I look forward to his future participation." - Wayne Specht, Artistic Director, 14th Annual Vancouver International Comedy Fest.
Tim Homayoon
One of the fastest rising comics around. At the tender age of only 25, this New York comic has already accumulated over 8 years of stand-up experiences. Not only has he dedicated himself to performing stand-up comedy, but has also appeared in over a dozen cable shows as well as appearing in films, radio shows and theaters.
Chris Pick
His comedy is a mental release on an indirect level. "A little nuts", as most people say, but really he just got hugged in the wrong way as a child.
Murray Cunningham
Cunningham is considered one of the fastest rising newcomers to the Alberta comedy scene. With a 20 year career in the broadcast news business, Cunningham is also a part-time instructor in the Journalism program at Calgaryšs Mount Royal College.
Monica Jordan
Although a relative new comer to comedy, Monica Jordan improves every time she gets on stage and FunnyFest is expecting big things from her come June.
Brent Nichols
Nichols is a local comedic giant, with a talent that towers over the Calgary comedy scene. His humour is wry and thoughtful, with a wit so dry it is a fire hazard.
Johnnie Bishop
- Yuk yuk search for funniest 1998
- Professional comic for 5 years
- Toured all over Western Canada & USA
- Local boy does good for Alberta and his home Village of Balzac
Stu Hughes
Stu Hughes is a true Western Canadian. A man of incorrigible principles, his relentless campaign to free the Canadian prairies of mimes has been an inspiration to thousands. Stu has risen above dark rumours of liasons with TeleTubbies to become a living foundation of Western Canadian standup comedy, of Prairie spirit, and of dubious taste.
